EXAM ROOM PLAYBOOK
Mistake 1 · Answering before decoding the verb
Markers reported scripts where learners wrote everything they knew instead of what was asked. Before writing, underline the command verb (explain, justify, compare) and the topic. Create a margin code such as “EX” for explain to keep the instruction visible.
Mistake 2 · Ignoring allocated marks
When a 3-mark question receives a single sentence, markers cannot award the missing working. During practice sessions, highlight the mark allocation and draft a quick plan—for example, “definition + formula + concluding sentence.”
Mistake 3 · Untidy calculations
Across Maths and Physics scripts, cramped calculations cost method marks. Use a double-line layout: calculations on the left, statements on the right. If you make an error, neatly cross out and rewrite. Markers are trained to scan from top to bottom; help them award you method marks by keeping each step visible.
Mistake 4 · Leaving theory blanks
Many learners skipped theory definitions because they could not recall the precise wording. Instead of leaving it blank, write the concept in your own words and underline the keywords you are confident about. Partial marks add up quickly.
Mistake 5 · No time for checking
The final ten minutes often disappear because learners underestimate writing speed. Practice with a 5-minute warning alarm. When it rings during study sessions, stop mid-sentence and jump straight to checking. Training this “emergency brake” helps you do it automatically in the exam.
Implement the fixes this week
- Print a copy of this list and stick it on your desk.
- During the next past-paper session, tick each habit as you execute it.
- After the session, score yourself out of five and set a micro-goal for the next attempt.
Improvement is less about “studying more” and more about writing in a way that markers can reward. These tweaks can easily add 8–12% to your final grade.
