Maths or Maths Literacy: which should you choose?
At the end of Grade 9 you pick one: Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy (Maths Lit). You'll take it all the way to matric, and it decides which courses you can apply for after school. So it's worth five minutes to get it right.
People call it maths vs maths lit, or pure maths vs Maths Lit. It's the same choice, and it's the Grade 9 subject choice most families worry about.
Here's the short version, then the detail.
- If in doubt, take Mathematics. It's the safe choice, because it keeps the most doors open after school.
- Maths Lit is for learners who are really struggling with maths. It's the easier subject, and for those learners it's a good fit.
(Some technical schools also offer Technical Mathematics. We cover it in the questions at the end.)
What's the difference between Mathematics and Maths Literacy?
Mathematics is what people call pure maths or core maths: algebra, graphs, trigonometry, geometry, calculus and so on. Each year builds on the last, so if Grade 9 algebra already feels shaky, Grade 10 gets hard quickly.
Maths Lit is maths for everyday life. You work with budgets, tax, bank fees, maps, measurements, data and chance, using real situations like a payslip, a cell phone contract or planning a trip. There's far less algebra.
Maths Lit is the easier of the two, and it's made for learners who aren't strong in maths. That's not a bad thing. Plenty of learners who were failing Mathematics do well in Maths Lit and finish matric with a much better mark.
| Mathematics | Maths Lit | |
|---|---|---|
| What you study | Algebra, graphs, trigonometry, geometry, calculus | Budgets, tax, maps, measurement, data, chance |
| How hard | Harder; each year builds on the last | Easier; much less algebra |
| Physical Sciences | Yes | Usually not allowed |
| Bachelor's pass | Counts | Counts |
| Courses it opens | Almost all, including science, engineering, medicine, accounting and IT | Many, but not courses that need Mathematics |
| Switching later | Can usually move to Maths Lit | Very hard to move to Mathematics |
Which courses need Mathematics, and which accept Maths Lit?
Mathematics keeps more doors open. A lot of courses won't accept Maths Lit at all, usually:
- engineering
- science, health sciences and medicine
- most accounting, actuarial and commerce degrees
- IT and computer science
Plenty of courses do accept Maths Lit. Often:
- law
- teaching
- humanities and social sciences
- some nursing and other health diplomas
- many diplomas and higher certificates
Some ask for a higher Maths Lit mark than they would for Mathematics. Every university has its own rules, so look up the courses you're interested in before you choose.
One thing to know: when a course asks for Mathematics, Maths Lit usually doesn't count instead. They're separate subjects, not a higher and lower level of the same one.
Can you go to university with Maths Lit?
Yes, for many courses. Maths Lit counts towards a bachelor's pass like your other subjects, so you can still qualify to apply for a degree. What it changes is which degrees you can apply for.
What about your APS?
Whichever one you take counts as one of your six APS subjects. Some universities give Maths Lit fewer points, or don't accept it for courses that need Mathematics. Our guide on how to work out your APS score explains how it works.
Can you take Physical Sciences with Maths Lit?
Usually not. You'll almost certainly need Mathematics. Most schools won't let you take Physical Sciences with Maths Lit, because physics and chemistry use algebra and equations all the time.
How to choose
Go through these four questions:
- Does anything you might want to study need Mathematics? If yes, or you're not sure yet, start with Mathematics. You can usually move to Maths Lit later, but going the other way is very hard.
- How is Grade 9 maths going? Look at algebra and equations especially, not just the overall mark. If you're failing algebra in Grade 9, Mathematics in Grade 10 will be tough. Some teachers use a rough line: well under 30% at the end of Grade 9, or under 40% at the end of Grade 10, and Maths Lit is probably the kinder choice.
- Will you put in the practice? Mathematics rewards steady work. An average learner who practises often does better than a strong one who doesn't.
- What does your maths teacher say? They see how you work, not only your marks.
If you want a course that needs Mathematics but your marks are low, getting help early is usually better than dropping to Maths Lit straight away.
But don't force it either. If the marks stay low term after term, even with extra help, pushing on with Mathematics usually means a weak mark and a lot of stress. Moving to Maths Lit and doing well there is often the better result.
Low marks aren't always about ability, though. Sometimes a learner has missed a topic, or had a hard year with a teacher. That's why a whole year's marks tell you more than one bad test.
If you choose Mathematics, don't fall behind
Most learners who drop Mathematics don't fail because they can't do it. They fall behind on one topic, and the next one builds on it. Our cheat sheets explain one topic at a time, in plain words with worked examples, so a learner can catch up on the part they missed instead of giving up on the whole subject. You can start with a free one. And when matric comes, our guide on how to study for Grade 12 Maths shows where the marks are and how to revise.
Can you switch from Maths to Maths Lit later?
From Mathematics to Maths Lit: usually yes, but every school and province has its own deadline, and most won't allow changes in Grade 12. If you think you might switch, ask your school early in Grade 11.
From Maths Lit to Mathematics: very hard, because you'd have missed the work it builds on. After Grade 10 it's rarely possible.
Should my child take Maths or Maths Lit?
You don't need to be good at maths to help with this. Ask your child what they'd like to study or do after school, check whether those courses need Mathematics, and look at their Grade 9 algebra marks together. Start from Mathematics, because it keeps the most options open. If they're struggling heavily and none of their options need Mathematics, Maths Lit is a sensible choice, not a step down.
Questions learners and parents ask
Is Maths Literacy easier than Mathematics?
Yes. It has much less abstract algebra and is built for learners who aren't strong in maths.
Should my child take Maths or Maths Lit?
If in doubt, Mathematics: it keeps the most doors open. Maths Lit is the right choice when a learner is struggling heavily with Mathematics and the courses they want don't need it.
Can I go to university with Maths Literacy?
Yes, for lots of courses, and you can still get a bachelor's pass. But many science, engineering, health and commerce degrees need Mathematics, so check yours first.
Can I take Physical Sciences with Maths Literacy?
Usually not. Most schools only allow Physical Sciences with Mathematics.
When is it too late to switch from Maths to Maths Lit?
It depends on your school and province. Many don't allow changes in Grade 12, so ask early in Grade 11.
What is Technical Mathematics?
A third option, mostly at technical schools. It's maths for technical and trade work. If you're thinking of university, check how the course you want treats it.
Does Maths or Maths Lit count in my APS?
Yes, whichever one you take is one of your six subjects. Some universities give Maths Lit fewer points.
Does Maths Literacy count for a bachelor's pass?
Yes. It counts like your other subjects towards a bachelor's pass. It only limits which degrees you can apply for.
What's the difference between Technical Maths and Maths Lit?
Technical Mathematics is closer to Mathematics, with algebra and graphs, but aimed at technical and trade subjects. Maths Lit is maths for everyday life. Technical Maths is only offered at some schools.
What jobs can you do with Maths Literacy?
Lots, including law, teaching, HR, marketing, sales, admin, hospitality and many trades. The ones that usually need Mathematics are engineering, chartered accounting, the sciences, medicine and IT.
Can I do accounting with Maths Literacy?
Usually not if you want to become a chartered accountant, which needs Mathematics. Some business and bookkeeping diplomas accept Maths Lit, so check the exact course.
Is Maths Literacy a bad choice?
No. It's the wrong choice for a learner who wants a course that needs Mathematics, and the right one for a learner who is struggling heavily and whose plans don't need it.
